AI vs Web Developer: Can AI Build Your Website, or Do You Still Need a Developer?
By Imran Hosain · · 6 min read
AI can now generate pages, layouts and code in minutes, so many people ask: do I still need a web developer? The honest answer is that it depends on what you are building. Here is a realistic look at what AI does well, where it struggles, and how to decide.
What AI does well
- Drafting layouts, text and starter code quickly
- Explaining errors and suggesting possible fixes
- Repetitive tasks such as converting formats, writing boilerplate, and generating variations
- Helping a developer move faster on routine parts of a project
I use Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT every day for exactly this. They make good developers faster.
Where AI struggles
The hard parts of a real website are usually the parts AI cannot see or cannot be held responsible for:
- Your actual environment. AI does not see your hosting, your plugin mix, your theme or your live data, so a fix that looks right may fail or break something else.
- Custom business logic. Pricing rules, memberships, bookings, integrations with other systems and unusual checkout flows need planning, not just code.
- Security and quality. Generated code can contain mistakes, outdated functions or missing protections. Someone has to review it.
- Debugging real problems. Plugin conflicts, server limits, caching issues and slow queries need hands-on diagnosis and testing.
- Accountability. If something breaks on launch day, AI cannot test on your live site, talk to your host or take ownership of the outcome.
When you can probably use AI alone
- A simple personal or portfolio page
- A prototype or idea you want to test quickly
- Small tweaks to a site you already understand
- Learning, where mistakes cost nothing
When to hire a developer
- Your site takes payments or handles customer data
- It must be fast, secure and reliable for real traffic
- You need custom features, integrations or a store (WooCommerce, Shopify)
- Your AI-built site is buggy, slow or you are not sure it is safe
- You want someone to maintain it and fix problems quickly
If you already started with AI, you do not have to start over. A developer can review what exists, keep the good parts and fix the rest. I explain the process in my guide on fixing a website built with AI.
The best approach: expert plus AI
The strongest setup today is not AI or a developer, it is both. AI speeds up drafts and routine work. An experienced developer decides what to build, reviews every important line, tests it on the real site and stays responsible for the result. That combination is how I work, and it is why projects can move faster without cutting corners.
Questions to ask before you decide
- What happens if this site breaks or is hacked?
- Does it handle money or personal data?
- Can I explain and maintain the code that exists?
- Who will fix it quickly when something goes wrong?
Frequently asked questions
For simple pages and prototypes it can do a lot. For secure, fast, custom or business-critical sites, you still need an experienced person to review, test and take responsibility.
Yes. Many, including me, use AI tools daily to move faster, then review and test the result.
It can be at the start. But fixing a broken, slow or hacked site later often costs more than building it carefully.
